This year, we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Keaukaha, one of Hawaiʻi’s first homestead communities established under the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1921. Nestled on the shores of Hilo, Keaukaha has become a symbol of resilience, cultural pride, and the enduring connection of ancestral lands.
For a century, Keaukaha has been a thriving hub where traditions flourish, ʻohana grow, and the aloha spirit lives on. Our community has preserved the teachings of our kūpuna, hosting hula, fishing, farming, and other cultural practices that strengthen our ties to the ʻāina and thus our identity.
This milestone is a time to honor the visionaries who fought for the Hawaiian Homes Act and the many generations who have called Keaukaha home. It is also a moment to reflect on the work still needed to protect and expand the promises made to us.
Let us gather, reminisce, and hold gratitude for the kūpuna, families, and leaders who have carried Keaukaha’s legacy forward, and aloha to the keiki who will continue to thrive on this land. Here’s to 100 years of Keaukaha’s vibrant history and to the many more ahead!
